First NMRC Workshop on Microplastics Monitoring (August 7)
We’re excited to share insights from the First NMRC Workshop on Microplastics Monitoring organised at the Australian Institute of Marine Science on 7th August 2025 and facilitated by NMRC from Flinders University. A big thank you to our wonderful hosts, Cherie Motti and Marina Santana for an excellent agenda and bringing together a diverse audience.
This workshop is the first in a series of workshops that is planned by NMRC and serves as a collaborative brainstorming and team-building session in preparation for an ARC grant application. We focus on addressing the emerging challenge of nano‐ and microplastics pollution in Australia and aim to build a national training and research program that not only tackles this pressing environmental issue but also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity building.
Special thanks to Melanie MacGregor, Sophie Leterme, Shima Ziajahromi for their great presentations, and to all participants for the engaging and thought-provoking discussions! We would also like to acknowledge Alexander Turra from the University of São Paulo, who spoke about international collaborative efforts to tackle microplastics challenges.
It’s inspiring to see our partnership continue to grow — especially at such a crucial time, with the Plastic Treaty negotiations underway behind the scenes.
